She is not so special to me because of my background: The first generation of immigrants didn't see women in this country, they didn't think about women of color. They didn't think about black people. In many ways they didn't understand those things and they went away, and still haven't. What is more unique to us than an immigrant, a white person? That is when our children came to our country and were introduced to black kids and they are learning here. The new museum is part of the Bicentennial Institute's campaign to educate people about the history of African American life on college campuses, and it seeks to reflect the life we live in so as to not ignore the diversity of this world. In a sense, African-Americans are now part of the population here; they came here. Where are the immigrants coming from? The Black people? The Mexicans and the Cambodians? These are just different people.
